This 45 minute video documentary is a KNA Centennial Program Planning Committee project and was premiered and applauded at the KNA 2005 Convention. “During the celebration of 100 years of nursing in Kentucky – NOT TO REMEMBER THE FOUR ARMY NURSES FROM KENTUCKY WHO WERE JAPANESE PRISIONERS for 33 months in World War II, would be a tragedy. Their story is inspirational and it is hoped that it will be shown widespread in all districts and in schools throughout Kentucky in 2006.

MARY BRECKINRIDGE PRINT

To celebrate the Centennial of professional nursing in Kentucky, a very special remembrance is now available. Perhaps the Commonwealth’s most famous and influential nurse has been Mary Breckinridge, Founder of Frontier Nursing Services. Headquartered at Wendover, Kentucky and started with three nurses in 1925, the Frontier Nursing Services became the largest midwifery school in the country. Continuing to thrive, it now includes four rural healthcare centers.

To bring honor to Mary Breckinridge, Historical Medical Art in Danville, Kentucky was contacted. Founded by Dr. Robert Joseph, this company’s sole purpose is to develop scenes of evolutionary periods of health professions and offer prints to health care professionals for framed display in offices, clinics, healthcare facilities, and homes. Experienced and talented artist Anne Crawford brings the subject matter to life on canvas after Dr. Joseph’s careful historical research and scene development.

A beautiful landscaped pictorial scene of Mary Breckinridge on horseback, bringing her nursing skills to a cabin in Leslie County (circa 1925), has been created. A “legend” text chronicling Mary Breckinridge’s life is included. The print is available in both 16” by 20” and 11” by 14” sizes as well as note cards. Endorsed by the Kentucky Nurses Association, a portion of each purchase price will be given by the Historical Medical Art to the Kentucky Nurses Association.

CENTENNIAL NIGHTINGALE LANTERN*

 For the KNA Centennial Celebration, a lamp has been selected as a symbol of professional nursing in Kentucky. 

One hundred years ago, a small group of nurses, prepared in Nightingale model schools, joined together to promote the profession and to protect both their patients and the public.  Initially known as the Kentucky State Association of Graduate Nurses, this group’s care, commitment and concern lit the flame for the Commonwealth’s nursing lamp.  Today the group is known as the Kentucky Nurses Association, and the lamp shines brightly. 

Our lamp is a ceramic replica of the one first used by Florence Nightingale and on display in her museum in London, England.  The original lamp is a Turkish candle lantern made from brass and inflammable linen so designed that wind would not extinguish the flame.
